At around two years old and 50lbs, this handsome German Shepherd mix has endured more hardships than any dog should ever face.
We found him as a dog surviving in the desert with an injury of unknown origin. When we took him to our veterinarian, the x-rays revealed another heartbreaking discovery: 5 BB gun pellets lodged in one of his remaining legs. Unfortunately, his injured leg had to be amputated, but due to the location of the BB pellets, they could not be removed and will forever be a part of Rupert’s story.
Despite this trauma, Rupert is incredibly happy-go-lucky, playful, and surprisingly calm in energy.
He absolutely loves other larger dog friends, and thrives in their company. With women, he is sweet, affectionate, and trusting. However, older men can make him nervous, and when frightened, his instinct is simply to retreat and create distance.
Despite everything he’s been through, Rupert has held onto his joy, his gentle spirit, and his ability to love.
He’s looking for a patient, understanding home that will celebrate his resilience, honor his boundaries, and show him that safety, kindness, and belonging are here to stay.
Herding-type dogs are typically bright, biddable and attentive to their person, with a tendency to be watchful and sometimes reactive to fast movement.
High — 60+ minutes plus mental work.
Trainability helps a lot in the city. Socialize early to bikes, scooters and crowds.
